Birth Control Q & A

What is birth control?

Birth control describes methods to prevent unintended pregnancies. Some forms of birth control can also be useful for regulating periods and reducing symptoms of gynecological conditions like endometriosis.

Aventura OB-GYN Specialists offer a range of birth control options for adolescent girls and women. The providers can also help you decide which birth control method fits your lifestyle, personal preferences, and family plans.

What birth control options are available?

Aventura OB-GYN Specialists offer many types of birth control, as well as personalized family planning services to help you create the family you want.

Available birth control options include:

Barrier methods

Barrier methods like condoms, sponges, cervical caps, and diaphragms block sperm from traveling to eggs for fertilization.

Hormonal birth control

Hormonal birth control contains hormones like estrogen and progesterone to stop ovulation and prevent sperm from entering the uterus. Hormonal birth control options include pills, patches, injections, and intrauterine devices (IUDs).

Nonhormonal birth control

Copper IUDs are a form of nonhormonal birth control. These IUDs use copper, which is toxic to sperm, instead of hormones to prevent pregnancy.

Which birth control method is right for me?

Your choice of birth control depends on many factors, including your age, lifestyle, overall health, and plans for family. When you plan to have children in the near future, you may be a candidate for birth control pills, patches, injections, or other hormonal options.

If you’re looking for long-term pregnancy prevention, the providers can recommend an IUD that offers protection for up to 10 years. Women who can’t tolerate hormones can benefit from copper IUDs. Services are available in-office to place IUDs and remove them when you want to conceive.

The specialists also recommend that all women in nonmonogamous relationships use condoms every time they have sex to reduce their risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). When used correctly and consistently, condoms are the only birth control method that protects against STDs.

Women who are sure they are done having children may be a candidate for tubal ligation, a permanent form of birth control. The providers offer minimally invasive surgeries in-office to seal the tubes that eggs travel through to reach sperm for fertilization.
